Heritage

Our MK LGBTQ+ Heritage Project has already unearthed an incredible amount of information from archives, interviews and discussions at our monthly History Clubs.

Did you know that members of the LGBTQ+ community in Milton Keynes set up a Campaign for Homosexual Equality group in the 1970’s, a Lesbian and Gay Switchboard in the 1980’s, a youth group called Youthline in the 1990’s? Did you know we had our own community centres: the Freedom Centre in Neath Hill from 2000 to 2003 and Q:Space in Witan Gate from 2003 to 2005?

Our community has always found places to meet and socialise together, in pubs, clubs, community centres and open spaces. Often these have been a ‘gay night’ or ‘lesbian disco’ in the back room of a pub, or walks, outdoor activities and meals out. Our ever-growing catalogue of 65 places will be transformed into a queer map of Milton Keynes.

We have visited local and national archives and met over 50 people, many of whom will be interviewed for our Oral History film in 2025. We have heard countless inspiring stories and accounts of the discrimination and trauma our community has experienced.

Have you got memories, stories or artifacts (badges, programmes, flyers, memorabilia) to share?

Or do you want to know more about MK LGBTQ+ history?

Check out our 2025 calendar of events (see below), as part of our LGBTQ+ History and Heritage project, funded by the National Heritage Lottery Heritage Fund.
