Q:alliance is a strongly community and volunteer-led organisation, therefore we are always seeking new volunteers to become involved in our work. For all roles, you should be a LGBT-friendly person and have a non-judgemental understanding of some of the issues that may affect LGBT people. You do not need to be LGBT yourself. Our services are many and varied; they include drop-in sessions across MK & Bucks, e-mail support, an interactive and accessible community-led website, training and volunteering opportunities, specialist youth groups and counselling.
We currently have several specialist roles we need to fill, along with general volunteering skills. If any of the below sound an appealing way for you to give back to the community, please email volunteer {at} qalliance.org(.)uk
Trustees We are currently looking for members of the LGBT community to join our Board of Trustees. The Trustees are responsible for the over-all strategic governing of an organisation. The skills needed for this role vary enormously but all Trustees should be organised, enthusiastic individuals who can offer a minimum 5-6 hours per month. If you have particular areas of knowledge (such as fundraising, voluntary sector in MK & Bucks, marketing, human resources) that are valued within a committee dynamic, we would particularly welcome your contribution. For more information please see Trustee Role Description
Admin Support
We are always looking for help with admin support and this can be anything from simple filing and sealing / stamping envelopes to replying to letters and recording data on spreadsheets. We also need help to keep our offices tidy and the centre clean.
Fundraising
Like many charities, Q:alliance draws its funding from a wide range of ever-changing sources. We require enthusiastic, organised volunteers who would be prepared to organise fundraising events, undertake sponsorships, work on grant bids or any other way of raising funds for Q:alliance. This role would be supported by the Q:alliance staff.
HIV Quick Test Receptionists
As part of our new HIV Rapid testing service, which launched in September 2007, we are looking for volunteer receptionists for the project, for about 4.5 hours per month. You would need to arrive at the office at 10:30am on the first Saturday of each month, ensure the space is lit, tidy and that the HIV nurse has access to set-up. You would then provide reception duties between 11-3pm, which would involve greeting people in a friendly, sensitive manner, seating them in the shared waiting area, and handing them a form to complete. There may also be occasions when the phone needs to be answered, and messages taken for any calls that aren’t relating to the HIV screening service. For more information Click Here
Outreach
Q:alliance tries to take every opportunity to promote our services, to let people know what we can offer them. This means that we attend a range of events, from summer festivals and information fairs, to nightclubs and educational institutions, hosting stands or running introductory sessions about the work we do. If you are outgoing, confident and polite, we would welcome your involvement in this aspect of the work. We will provide training in the skills and knowledge needed for this kind of work.
Running Social Groups
Q:alliance currently organises LGBT social groups, and also provides support to members of the LGBT community who wish to start their own community groups. We would be happy to provide training and support for volunteers who wish to become ‘hosts’ (in a similar way the youth groups but for adults) for such groups. This does not have to be a weekly commitment as we have rotas for the drop-in’s on a monthly basis.
Q:youth
We run a weekly youth group for LGBT people aged 11-25. This is usually staffed by two paid workers but the additional contribution made by volunteers to the groups is invaluable. The volunteers welcome new-comers, run activities or provide support for the worker’s activities, provide a listening ear if a young person needs a chat and many other things within the group setting. Currently, the youth group volunteers attend one session per week (for 3 hours), although we also welcome people who would want to volunteer every other week. Want to find out more about Q:youth? Click Here or email youthgroup {at} qalliance.org(.)uk
We would also welcome volunteers with skills such as training delivery, administrative support, tidying/cleaning the centre and running our library..
Please email volunteer {at} qalliance.org(.)uk for further details on any of the above roles or if you have an idea for a new LGBT community service and want Q:alliance’s support.
