Training

Essential training for your staff, volunteers and trustees

Today, understanding and responding to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people is no longer a case of good practice. It’s an essential requirement for organisations providing services, whether in the private, public or voluntary sectors. New legal protections and changes in society mean that LGBT people are more visible in all walks of life and are more likely to expect treatment that is relevant and doesn’t discriminate or exclude.

Q:alliance offers a number of affordable standard and tailored training modules and an organisational advice service to help you meet the needs of your diverse clients, customers, staff and volunteers. You can have confidence in knowing that your organisation is meeting its legal and social responsibilities.

Foundation ½ day

What everyone needs to know about the experience and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

This module is aimed at individuals who have limited knowledge or experience of LGBT issues and those who require refresher training. It’s suitable for staff, trustees and volunteers with a wide range of responsibilities.

The training explores with individuals what their understanding of sexuality and gender identities is and how this knowledge is constructed through a range of institutional experiences; the family, the law, the church and the media. It explains how LGBT people and wider society respond to these powerful messages. In the second half, the emphasis shifts to modern understandings of sexuality and gender identity and the role that gay communities serve today. It ends with a quiz to test the learning and a certificate presentation.

Why you should choose us

Q:alliance is a voluntary sector organisation established in 2005 and is a merger of several projects, including Lesbian and Gay Link, established first as the lesbian and gay helpline in 1975 and the award winning charity, Youthline, established in 1985. We are a professional organisation with high standards and we manage a number of support, advocacy and advice services to communities in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and further afield.

Importantly, we are managed and run by local people, who have detailed knowledge of the issues and challenges that organisations face locally and the issues that are important to local gay people. Our training associates, all of whom are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, have many years experience developing and delivering training days to a wide range of organisations.

What delegates can expect

On all our training modules, we provide a safe, comfortable, welcoming and fully accessible space at Acorn House, the hub of the voluntary sector in Milton Keynes. Q:alliance training is participative, and experiential and delegates are treated with dignity and respect. All modules come with handouts and certificates of attendance and plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits with lunch included on the full day modules. Full days also include an action planning element to ensure that learning is transferred into positive action. Delegates leave our training days having had an enjoyable experience and having significantly developed their knowledge and awareness of LGBT issues.
