Modules

Our standard ‘off the shelf’ modules

Foundation ½ day

What everyone needs to know about the experience and needs of
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

This module is aimed at individuals who have limited knowledge or
experience of LGBT issues and those who require refresher training. It’s
suitable for staff, trustees and volunteers with a wide range of responsibilities.

The training explores with individuals what their understanding of sexuality
and gender identities is and how this knowledge is constructed through a
range of institutional experiences; the family, the law, the church and the
media. It explains how LGBT people and wider society respond to these
powerful messages. In the second half, the emphasis shifts to modern
understandings of sexuality and gender identity and the role that gay
communities serve today. It ends with a quiz to test the learning and a
certificate presentation.

Legal ½ day

What everyone needs to know about legal protections for lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people.

This module is aimed at individuals who want to gain an intermediate level
of understanding in the legal protections for LGBT people. It’s essential
training for managers and policy officers in a wide range of private, public and
voluntary sector organisations, as well as staff with specialist responsibilities,
such as HR managers, compliance and equality officers.

The training gives delegates a good understanding of the provisions of
the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations, the Gender
Recognition Act, the Equality Act, the Civil Partnerships Act and other legal
protections advanced in the past decade. It also explains when discrimination

can be lawful and uses legal case studies to demonstrate how individuals and
institutions are using the new laws. It ends with a quiz to test the learning and
a certificate presentation.

Inclusion 1 day

How to develop and deliver inclusive services to lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender people.

This module is for staff working in public bodies; police, fire and paramedic
officers, community support officers, housing officers, health and community
care workers, GP’s, social services staff and for staff in voluntary and private
sector organisations delivering services to the public. It’s relevant to customer
facing staff as well as well as managers and policy developers.

The training will support delegates in providing services which are open and
accessible to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Delegates will
gain an understanding of how their personal and organisational language,
imagery, policy, practice and behaviour can result in inclusive or excluding
service delivery. The programme allows delegates to assess their personal
and organisational competency at key points and includes an action planning
element to transform the learning into positive action.

Youth 1 day

How to support and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
young people.

This module is for staff and volunteers who work with youth people in a
variety of settings including; teachers, teaching assistants and school staff,
youth workers, careers advisors, youth offending teams, children’s services
staff, counsellors and voluntary agencies delivering services or advocacy for
young people. It’s relevant to those who work directly with young people and
managers and policy developers.

The training will give delegates an understanding of the importance of gender
and sexuality in the formation of youth and adult identities and how coming
out to self and others can act as a significant barrier or a force for liberation.
Delegates will learn about the specific risks for young gay people, what to
look out for and how to meet different needs and challenge inappropriate
behaviours. The programme allows delegates to assess their personal and
organisational competency at key points and includes an action planning
element to transform the learning into positive action.
