Equality Training

Essential training for your staff, volunteers and trustees

Today, understanding and responding to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender (LGBT) people is no longer a case of good practice. It’s an
essential requirement for organisations providing services, whether in the
private, public or voluntary sectors. New legal protections and changes in
society mean that LGBT people are more visible in all walks of life and are
more likely to expect treatment that is relevant and doesn’t discriminate or
exclude.

Q:alliance offers a number of affordable standard and tailored training
modules and an organisational advice service to help you meet the needs
of your diverse clients, customers, staff and volunteers. You can have
confidence in knowing that your organisation is meeting its legal and social
responsibilities.

Our standard training modules

Our standard modules were developed in response to the types of training
we’re often asked to provide. We run these at your place of business or at
Acorn House, the hub of the voluntary sector in Central Milton Keynes. The
advantage of choosing one of these modules is that they are ‘off the shelf’
and you won’t have to pay a design fee.

We currently have 4 standard modules available:

  • Foundation – half day – What everyone needs to know about the experience and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
  • Legal – half day – What everyone needs to know about legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
  • Inclusion – full day – how to develop and deliver inclusive services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
  • Youth – full day – how to support and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people.

Our tailored training modules

Many organisations prefer to have a training module developed to meet
their specific circumstances. Q:alliance can develop a tailored module and
deliver this for you at your place of business or at Acorn House in Central
Milton Keynes. This can run from just a couple of hours to a full day or more.
We will usually meet with you or discuss your needs on the phone and then
develop a draft training plan and programme free of charge. If you decide to
proceed, we may charge you a small design fee where we need to spent time
developing new materials or activities.

Organisational advice

Q:alliance training associates have extensive experience of supporting
organisations who are aiming to develop more inclusive policy and services.
We can advise you about conducting needs analysis, consulting with LGBT
people, building community confidence and responding to specific challenges
such as homophobic bullying or discrimination. We can also help you to
access local LGBT networks and community groups.

What delegates can expect

Q:alliance training is participative, supportive and experiential and delegates
are treated with dignity and respect. Full days include an action planning
element to ensure that learning is transferred into positive action. All modules
come with handouts and we can provide certificates of attendance if required.
Training can take place at your premises or at Acorn House, the hub of
the voluntary sector in Central Milton Keynes. At Acorn House, we can
provide tea, coffee and biscuits and lunch on the full day modules. Whether
your training is 2 hours or a full day or more, delegates leave our training
having had an enjoyable experience and having significantly developed their
knowledge and awareness of LGBT issues.
