Living Library
Milton Keynes Central Library
Saturday 13 June 2009
10am – 4pm
The Living Library works like a normal library – readers come and borrow a book for a limited period of time and when they have finished they can return it and borrow another. There is one key difference – the ‘Books’ in the Living Library are human beings and the reader can enter into a dialogue with that ‘Book’. The ‘human Books’ on offer might include: an athlete, 2nd World War evacuee, local fire-fighter or police officer, a nun, a homosexual person, Big Issue seller, male nurse, soldier, single dad, psychic, witch, parent of an autistic child or representative from minority ethnic groups, and many others.
This event will give people an opportunity to speak to a ‘stranger’ in a protected environment. The Living Library project gives direct access to someone else’s experience by allowing people to ‘borrow’ a person who is an expert in their field, has significant experience to share, or is passionate about a hobby.
The Living Library event will take place on Saturday 13th June 2009 between 10.00am and 4.00pm at Milton Keynes Central Library. ‘Loans’ will take the form of a conversation and will last for 30 minutes maximum. All volunteers are asked to commit between two and six hours for the event, if possible. Library staff will be available on the day to ensure any support or assistance needed is given. Also, refreshments will be provided and travel expenses for the day will be paid.
We need you or anyone you know to volunteer to become a Living Library Book. For more information please contact:
