“Totgeschlagen - Totgeschwiegen” (struck dead and silenced) - the pink triangle memorial in Berlin
Have you ever listened to a holocaust memorial event and thought “but where are the lesbian and gay people?”. Far too often our community’s horrendous losses are forgotten - and with them, the lessons about the consequences of staying silent while prejudice acts.
Well, now you have the chance to do something about that!
Milton Keynes is organising its next annual Holocaust Memorial Day on January 22nd or 29th 2009, and the group organising it is already meeting.
We are invited to send a representative if we want, to work out how our communities’ memories and issues can be incorporated. The event involves a wide range of church and community groups and school groups. The next meeting is on June 9th at 4pm in the Council offices and we need to be there if we want to get involved!
This might be something as simple as including a few poems, facts and issue articles pulled off the internet, or it might be as complex as local history work to see if we can collect actual memories from people who knew of friends or relatives lost in the holocaust. Or anything in between - or different! What do our young adults make of the holocaust and its relevance for LGBT lives today, for instance?
